Jacob Carpenter was selected last month to be the next editor in chief of The State News, effective for the spring semester 2010.

Carpenter, a senior journalism major from West Bloomfield, will finish the term of current ENC Whitney Gronski, who is leaving at the end of fall 2009 to take an internship.

Carpenter's term will last only during the spring semester.

Carpenter is currently interning for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in its Washington, D.C. bureau. He has previously interned at the Grand Rapids Press and the Jackson Citizen-Patriot.

Carpenter is among the most-honored S'Newsers in recent memory.

He won first place for News Story in the 2009 Associated Collegiate Press contest; second place for Journalist of the Year as well as various places for investigative reporting, sports feature, news story, multimedia reporting and blogging in the 2009 Michigan Press Association contest; and was the 2009 winner of the SNAA Journalistic Effort of the Year Award.

Carpenter's experiences at TSN include coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Denver; the Capital One Bowl in Orlando; and the mysterious death of an MSU student in Indiana, among other assignments.

Carpenter's staff for the spring will be selected later this month.
