Rewarding great students and great work.

The State News Alumni Association Scholarship Fund seeks to reward current staffers for their outstanding work at The State News. Our immediate goal is to create an endowment to support the our two scholarships, the Award for Journalistic Achievement and the Most Valuable Staffer Award. We also are pursuing other scholarships and honorariums as funds become available. For more information about our scholarships and giving programs, contact us.

You can double the impact of your donation if your employer has a gift-matching program. Find out how.

Award for Journalistic Achievement

Since 1997, the State News Alumni Association has annually honored a student staffer (or staff team) for his or her outstanding journalistic contribution to The State News. Honorees need not be newsroom employees (advertising campaigns, for instance, will be considered as will student-led projects that benefit the newspaper). Honorees are recognized for special projects and outstanding work from the past academic year.

Honorees are chosen by a committee of alumni from among individual applicants and those nominated by others. This award, which comes with a $500 cash scholarship, is presented at the newspaper’s annual student awards banquet. Scholarship monies for this prize currently are distributed from an account established at MSU by the Office of Financial Aid and may be applied to any outstanding tuition bills before the remainder of the prize is distributed to a student.

Most Valuable Staffer Award

Each year, the State News Alumni Association honors a student staffer for his or her innovation and leadership at The State News. Honorees may work in any department of the newspaper and need not be “leaders” by title. We are seeking students who do outstanding work and inspire others also to do so.

Honorees are nominated by fellow staff members who recognize them as a sort of "most-valuable player" at the newspaper and are chosen by a committee of the Alumni Association board of directors. Self-nominations also are accepted. This award, which comes with a $500 cash scholarship, is presented at the newspaper’s annual student awards banquet.

Honorees may be recognized for special projects and outstanding work from the past academic year or for an accumulation of achievements during their State News careers. Judges will consider the quality of work and overall contributions to the newspaper.
