Jerald terHorst, a State News alumnus who was inducted into the alumni Hall of Fame, died March 31. He was 87.

TerHorst made headlines when he resigned as President Gerald Ford's press secretary following the president's pardon of Richard Nixon.

"Dad was always a fighter, but his physical condition had weakened," son Peter terHorst told The Detroit News for an extensive obituary about his father. "He persisted."

TerHorst met his wife, Louise, while they worked at The State News. Louise died last year.

TerHorst was the Washington bureau chief and a columnist for The Detroit News when Gerald R. Ford rose to the presidency and asked terHorst to serve as his press secretary.TerHorst had covered Ford earlier as a reporter at The Grand Rapids Press.

He was inducted into the first class of the State News Hall of Fame in 2006.
