Stories about a Rather Hall fight that resulted in the dismissal of a pair of MSU football players drove Web traffic to record levels recently.

The story -- exclusively broken by The State News, based on first-hand victim and witness interviews by reporter Brittany Shammas -- and related follow-ups drove most of the 43,492 unique page views to on Nov. 24.

By comparison, a typical weekday draws around 7,500 UPVs, which usually top out around 15,000 UPVs on the busiest of news days.

That record day was followed by another 21,273 UPVs on Nov. 25.

The State News reports came despite an almost total information clampdown regarding the incident by MSU police, administration and the athletic department.

The Nov. 22 assault was followed by the dismissal from the football team of running back Glenn Winston and defensive back Roderick Jenrette for what the school has termed as unspecified violation of team rules.

The school has yet to publicly connect Winston and Jenrette to the fight. The State News identified the pair, based on witness and victim statements.

In a separate incident, Winston was charged with assaulting an MSU hockey player last year, resulting in the hockey player's hospitalization. Nonetheless, Winston was allowed to return to the team.
