Book sales, donations to benefit MSU journalism scholarships

LANSING, Mich. — Meet Pulitzer Prize-winning Detroit Free Press reporters M.L. Elrick and Jim Schaefer at a journalism scholarship benefit and signing for their book, “The Kwame Sutra: Musings on Lust, Life and Leadership from Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick,” at the Nuthouse Sports Grill from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 16. The reporters uncovered the text message scandal that led to Kilpatrick’s resignation.

The event is free and open to the public. Sales of “The Kwame Sutra” at this event will benefit journalism scholarships at Michigan State University’s School of Journalism and The State News.

Donations also will be accepted. There will be a cash bar.

Elrick and Schaefer have been touring Michigan to promote the 80-page book, now on its third press run, and raise awareness about public accountability. March 14-20 is Sunshine Week, a national initiative to prompt dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. For more information about Sunshine Week, visit www.sunshineweek.org.

The book is a collection of Kilpatrick’s quotations – as well as quotes from those around him – including public pronouncements, candid asides, unscripted outbursts and secret text messages.

In 2009, Schaefer and Elrick received the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting for their coverage of Kilpatrick’s text message scandal. The scandal led to Kilpatrick’s resignation and his admission of lying under oath in a wrongful termination lawsuit brought by two Detroit police officers.

The Lansing event is sponsored by the MSU School of Journalism, State News Alumni Association and the Society of Professional Journalists Mid-Michigan Pro Chapter, with support from The Rossman Group and The John Truscott Group.

MSU is celebrating the centennial of its journalism program this year. The first journalism course was offered at then-Michigan Agricultural College in April 1910 ¬– one year after students began publishing The Holcad, which later became The State News. (View a timeline of journalism history at MSU at jrn.msu.edu.)

Elrick is an MSU alumnus who worked at The State News when he was a student. He was inducted into the State News Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2009.
